## What is this site?

This is a [digital garden](/digital_garden) that brings together my old WordPress portfolio and blog from my teenager, along with notes I’ve been writing over the past few years on [Cosense](/cosense) and various social media.

These are things I’ve actually been asked, by friends, colleagues, and sometimes total strangers who just email me out of the blue.

### Where does the “89” in your handle come from? Were you born in 1989?

It’s just a wordplay on my first name, Baku in Japanese. The “89” doesn’t refer to my birth year.

### Where do you live?

I’m based in **Tokyo**, but I’m originally from **Hokkaido** in northern Japan. The climate here in Tokyo doesn’t really suit me, so I’ve been toying with the idea of splitting my time between two places, at least during the summer.

### What’s the distinctive font you’re using?

- The heading typeface (for English text) is [**Gestures**](https://gestures.studiomoniker.com/) by Studio Moniker, a Dutch interactive design studio. Each character comes with quirky alternate characters.
- The monospace font is [**Fira Code**](https://github.com/tonsky/FiraCode), designed for programming. It includes ligatures that merge common symbol pairs. For example, typing “`>`” and “`=`” together automatically renders as “`>=`”.
